An Introduction to Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple

In the western part of Shanghai, a very modern and flourishing city, there is a venerable and famous Buddhist temple, Jade Buddha Temple.Jade Buddha Temple is an active temple which attracting large numbers of visitors, both local and overseas Chinese tourists, with 70 resident monks at the last count. It situated in the northwest near the intersection of Anyuan Lu and Jiangning Lu.

The temple was established in 1882 when two jade Buddha statues were imported to Shanghai from Burma by a monk named Huigen. But the temple was destroyed during the revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty. Fortunately the jade Buddha statues were saved and a new temple was built on the present site in 1928 and was named the Jade Buddha Temple. It includes the Hall of Heavenly King, Mahavira Hall, Jade Buddha Hall, Reclining Buddha Hall, Kwan-yin Hall, Bronze Buddha Hall, Buddhism classrooms, guest rooms, religious offices, and a dining hall for monks.

Jade Buddha Temple houses two valuable jade statues - the Sitting Buddha and the Recumbent Buddha. Both the Sitting Buddha and the Recumbent Buddha are carved with whole white jade. The sparkling and crystal-clear white jade gives the Buddhas the beauty of sanctity and make them more vivid. The Sitting Buddha is 190 centimeters high; wearing a robe inlaid with precious the agate and the emerald and portraying the Buddha at the moment of his meditation and enlightenment. The Recumbent Buddha is 96 centimeters long, lying on the right side with the right hand supporting the head and the left hand placing on the left leg, this shape is called the "lucky repose". The sedate face shows the peaceful mood of Sakyamuni when he left this world.

The construction of the temple is in the magnificent architectural style of the Song Dynasty. Still inhabited by monks, the temple consists of three main halls and two courtyards. The temple has a number of ancient sculptures, rare paintings and Buddhist scriptures. More than 7,000 Dazang sutras are kept in the Jade Buddha Tower. These are all the inestimable culture relics.

Whether you are a Buddhist or not, the Jade Buddha Temple is a good place to escape the urban throngs and soak up some culture. The peaceful, serene atmosphere that pervades will help even the most stressed of tourists unwind and relax. Attention: In the temple, photography is forbidden.
